What is the Greater Boston Walk for Peace?

The Greater Boston Walk for Peace was started in 2007 by The Phoenix Project in order to make visible the efforts of itself and its partners towards reducing youth violence and making Boston a more peaceful city.  The Greater Boston Walk for Peace is not only a walk which advocates for peace in the world.  Its goal is more specific and practical in two particular ways – 1) it hopes to encourage the use of mind-body techniques that cultivate peace within the individual, so that his/her peace work in the world might be more empowered, authentic, and grounded, and 2) to provide a locus where individuals and organizations working for peace can network and collaborate.

What are the Mind-Body Techniques that will be present at the GBWP?

There are 3 primary tools that will be offered at the Greater Boston Walk for Peace:

1) The Jangsaeng Walking Method:  “Jangsaeng” is Korean for “longevity.” According to oriental medicine, this simple, meditative kind of walking stimulates acupressure points on the bottom of your feet, causing more energy to circulate through your body and results in a calm, peaceful state of mind.

2) Dahn MuDo: Dahn MuDo is a healing martial art that can look very similar to Tai Chi.  Its powerful, but gentle, motions stretch open the body and align it with the breath, so that one’s mind and body become relaxed, open, and focused.

3) Ji-Gam Meditation: “Ji-Gam” literally means “withdrawing from outward thoughts.”  By simply breathing and moving one’s hands back and forth one’s mind can find a place of deep relaxation and peace.
